Is it safer 2 let ur kids play running games in a park wearing flip flops or should u tell them 2 go barefoot?

We were at a church picnic last summer and my kids just had their flip flops on. They had a bunch of games like sack races, tug-o-war, volleyball, Frisbee, etc.

Would it have been better to let them play wearing their flip flops and risk twisting an ankle or should I have let them just play in their bare feet? The park looked fairly clean, but you never really know what is on the ground. My kids are 5 and 9.

(I'll tell you what my wife and I did after I get everyone's input.)

Is it safer 2 let ur kids play running games in a park wearing flip flops or should u tell them 2 go barefoot?
I would make sure they had decent shoes on, or even sandals.
Reply:any foot wear is better than none. you don't know what people have been doing at that park, there could be glass, needles, anything not to mention insects and stuff. i would make my kids wear foot wear because i wouldn't forgive myself if the contract a disease from stepping on a needle or something. ideal footwear would be ideal.
Reply:a would have made them keep shoes on, so they wouldnt get stung by stepping on a bee. and the next year i would have them wear real shoes
Reply:If I took my kids to the park, they would have had on sneakers or at least sturdy sandals that strap on.
Reply:personally, i let my girls run without shoes at that age, the body needs oxygen, that includes, the feet. And I think flip-flops are the worst, at twisting your ankle.
Reply:why dont you get shoes? flip flops can come off easily as well.

You wont be able to protect your kid everyday. shoes are the answers. not flip flops or barefeet.
Reply:Bare feet are best! Flipflops can indeed cause a kid to slip and fall although that too isn't too likely to end in a serious injury, sheez people in this question are afraid of every scratch or scrape! If they're playing sack races they're more likely to fall and skin their knees, should they wear knee pads?

But bare feet are pretty tough and a lot easier to get around in than loose footwear, and really not that likely to be injured. In fact kids running around barefoot even in countries with more litter and less hygiene have much healthier feet than kids here in the Western world with their well-meaning but over-protective parents.
Reply:Dr. Lynn Staheli, who directed the orthopedics division at the Children's Hospital in Seattle for 15 years, documented that children raised in parts of the world where shoes are rarely worn had better flexibility, mobility, and strength, which resulted in fewer foot-related problems and injuries. In the 1960 classic “Take Off Your Shoes and Walk,” chiropodist Simon Wikler notes that children who go barefoot regularly develop stronger, healthier, and more functional feet than children who are generally shod. (He notes that a “constantly shoe-wearing tenderfoot” is rarely able to comprehend the innate capability of the human foot.) The following site covers such topics as when and when not to let children go barefoot, what doctors think, and parental testimonials. It also features excerpts from “Take Off Your Shoes and Walk.”

In general, being barefoot promotes healthy development of musculature in the feet and legs, while excessive reliance on shoes tends to promote atrophy and weakness in those same muscles. This suggests that overdependency on shoes can have serious consequences. A study published in the September 2006 issue of Arthritis and Rheumatism found that “modern shoes may exacerbate the abnormal mechanics of lower-extremity osteoarthritis.” Researchers concluded that maybe it was time to re-evaluate our daily walking programs,

presumably to include time for walking barefoot.

Don't underestimate the functionality of a good strong pair of feet. Let the kids go barefoot as often as they like.
Reply:I would have made sure they brought tennis shoes to change into - but if they didn't have them flip flops on - I would worry about glass, stickers, small sticks, etc. lots of things can make an injury to the feet.
Reply:Well obviously proper shoes would have been better.

But if I did not have proper shoes I would have left their flip flops on. Better to risk a broken foot or sprained ankle than have them stand on a snake, or nail or ever worse a needle. And no matter how clean something looks you just never know!
