Why do some people think it's a good idea to ride a bike wearing flip-flops??

I frequently see adults bicycling in flip-flops. I can't think of a worse shoe for bicycling. There's no grip on the bottom to keep your foot on the pedal, and even if it grips, your foot could slip right out of the shoe. The flip-flop wearers usually aren't wearing helmets either.

Why do some people think it's a good idea to ride a bike wearing flip-flops??
i doubt people wear them on purpose or even think that wearing them is bad, i mean i know this one kid who lost part of his toe while on a bike wearing flip-flops, but i'm guessing most people either don't know the danger, don't care, or are too lazy to put on shoes
Reply:You're talking about people riding $50 Walmart bikes. Not real bike riders.
Reply:i think its comfy for them
Reply:luckily the only people I see wearing those are on beach style cruisers around the beach area... and yes, it is very unsafe.

they are not going that fast, and they usually don't wear a helmet either, so whatever they want to do is OK as long as they stay away from me!
Reply:Your question is so funny when I read the ? I cracked up laughing, just the thought of someone riding on a bike with flip flops on is hilarious and no helmet that speaks volumes alone. They don't care that's why. LOL!!!!!
Reply:because biking is supposed to be about joy and fun, not pain and tears... flip flops are fun.

helmets are for suckers, studies have shown that helmets can actually increase your chances of getting injured in certain falls.

addittionally, here is a fun fact for you. today there are fewer cyclists in america than 30 years ago. only about 15% of them in the 70's wore helmets, today about 80% do and yet there are more head injury fatalities in cycling today than in the 70's... with fewer cyclists wearing more helmets.
Reply:Stupid
Reply:Ha ha, I wear flip-flops a lot to ride my bike. Usually it's because I didn't have time to put on tennis shoes or I have to be somewhere in a hurry, or I'm just riding around my neighborhood and there's really no need for them. I only wear tennis shoes if I'm going to be riding fast, racing or going long distance. Girls are also expert flip-flop wearers and certainly won't be loosing them on a bicycle!
Reply:That is not very safe!! The crocs might be a worse shoe. I just started riding again. I wanted to start bad that I jumped on my bike in my crocs. Even though I was just riding down the street I felt very uncomfortable and my foot kept slipping off the pedal and out of my shoe. So, needless to say I am dying to find a descent pair of shoes to ride in before I go out again. I am over 55 and I don't need any extra pressure.
Reply:Some people are not very intelligent.
Reply:The same reason why they're usually weaving around on the wrong side of the road without a helmet. They're in a hurry to donate some organs.
Reply:I have a pair of open toed sandals that clip into the pedals of my Lemond. I love em.
Reply:are we talking in traffic on a commute or on some board walk or park path on some nostalgia cruiser? the reality is its their feet it they wanna tear em up i hope they have decent medical insurance. i know its stupid, you know its stupid and once they rip a hole in thier foot they will know it too. if they are in traffic its a bigger deal because the lives of others are dependant on thier ability to control thier machines. one thing that seems to be neglected in the bike driver debate is the psychological damage done to the driver that injures or kills a cyclist. regardles of who is at fault taking a life is hugely traumatic for some one (trust me im a vet). if you are in traffic on your bike than you had better be darn sure that you can completely control your machine. i dont believe that you can in sandals.
Reply:Unfortunately, there is no measurable minimum level of intelligence need to ride a bike (or post on the Internet).
Reply:People who ride around in flip-flops are either on beach cruisers at the beach and not going fast enough for it to matter alot... or they only have two brain cells and those two cells have forgotten how to communicate with each other.

As for the person who expressed disdain for helmets, you must not ride alot. I bit it hard going down a mountain fire road at 25 mph, landed head and shoulders first before skidding on my chest, elbows, and knees. I KNOW for a fact that my helmet worked as designed. The plastic sunvisor on it even came down over my sunglasses, nose, and mouth and protected me from sliding on my face.
Reply:my mom wouldn't let me ride my bike unless i had closed toe shoes on
