What kind of shoe can I wear with shorts that aren't flip flops?

I wear shorts and skirts all the time, especially in the summer, which approximates. I normally wear these with flips flops or other sandals, but would definitely love to switch it up. What types of close-toed shoes would anyone recommend to wear? Any tips? Advice?
